Chapter 14 - The Burner Phone
Naomi and Ethan managed to escape the convention center through a forgotten maintenance tunnel in the basement.
They drove a stolen, unmarked sedan through the pouring rain until they reached a highly classified safehouse on the outskirts of the city.
The safehouse was a heavily fortified concrete bunker disguised as an abandoned warehouse.
Once the heavy steel doors locked behind them, Ethan finally dropped the captured rifle onto a table and let out a heavy breath.
Naomi immediately began checking the perimeter alarms and loading fresh magazines for her pistol.
Suddenly, a cheap burner phone resting on the center table began to vibrate loudly.
Naomi had taken the phone from the pocket of one of the dead mercenaries in the hallway.
She stared at the glowing screen for a moment before pressing the speaker button.
"I hope you enjoyed the little light show, Naomi," Vanessa's toxic, mocking voice echoed through the concrete room.
Ethan froze, his eyes widening in absolute shock at the sound of his former fiancée.
"Vanessa," Ethan growled angrily. "You are completely insane."
"I am powerful, Ethan," Vanessa corrected him with a vicious laugh.
"I am standing right next to Victor Volkov, the man whose business you so rudely interrupted."
"He has two dozen highly trained killers searching the city for you right now."
"If you transfer all of your corporate assets to my offshore accounts by midnight, Victor will let you live."
"But the maid has to die," Vanessa added, her voice dropping into an ugly, hateful whisper.
Naomi leaned forward, resting her hands flat on the metal table.
"You really should have stayed in hiding, Vanessa," Naomi said softly, her voice devoid of any fear.
"You think you can fight a cartel?" Vanessa mocked aggressively.
"I think you brought a bunch of loud amateurs to a quiet war," Naomi replied before snapping the phone in half.

She looked at Ethan, her dark eyes flashing with a dangerous, lethal energy.
"We are not going to wait for them to find us," Naomi declared.
