Chapter 2 - The Night of the Party

The first Saturday in December arrived with a bitter, freezing wind.

Whitmore House looked like a glowing palace against the dark winter sky.

Three hundred of Boston's wealthiest elites gathered inside the grand ballroom.

There were politicians, real estate tycoons, and famous journalists sipping expensive champagne.

Naomi wore her standard gray housekeeper uniform, her dark hair pulled back tightly into a neat bun.

She moved invisibly through the glittering crowd, collecting empty glasses and clearing small plates.

Vanessa made a grand entrance down the sweeping staircase, wearing a custom white silk gown.

She looked absolutely stunning, radiating a cold, calculated perfection.

She clung tightly to Ethan's arm, making sure every photographer captured their perfect couple image.

But Ethan looked like a prisoner walking toward a very beautiful execution.

His eyes constantly scanned the massive room, searching for something real amidst all the fake smiles.

Just before midnight, Ethan slipped away from the crowded dance floor.

He walked into the quiet, dimly lit conservatory where the rare orchids were kept.

Naomi was already there, quietly organizing a tray of fresh champagne flutes for the final toast.

"You look tired, Ethan," Naomi said softly, not looking up from the glasses.

Ethan ran a hand through his expensive haircut and let out a bitter laugh.

"I feel like I am drowning in a sea of people who don't even know me," he confessed.

He stepped closer to the table, completely ignoring the social rules of his high-class world.

"This whole thing feels like a massive business transaction, Naomi."

Naomi finally looked up, her dark eyes filled with a quiet, profound understanding.

"You are the one holding the pen, Ethan," she reminded him gently.

"You don't have to sign a contract you don't believe in."

For a long moment, they just looked at each other in the quiet warmth of the conservatory.

There was a magnetic, undeniable pull between them that defied all logic and social class.

Neither of them realized that the conservatory doors had been pushed open slightly.

Vanessa stood in the dark hallway, her hands trembling with pure, unadulterated rage.

She watched her billionaire fiancé look at a common maid with more love than he had ever shown her.

Vanessa's perfectly painted lips twisted into an ugly, vicious sneer.

She was going to destroy Naomi Reyes tonight, right in front of everyone.
